Kit: ERTL MPC Back to the Future II 1/24 Scale
This is what happens when you love something too much. Back to the Future was pretty much my favorite movie, ever. As an adult I have a real DeLorean. This was my absolute obsession as a youth. Sometimes when you try too hard to do too many things at once the result is.. not good.
Once upon a time this was finished and looking pretty good. Then I got a crazy idea and made a little foil-lined compartment where one could insert dry ice chips and water and have smoke coming out of the vents. This was the kind of weird thing I did. One day I accidentally poked a hole in the foil liner and, well, that was the end of that feature.
The rest of the car looks.. almost passable. I really wanted a plutonium reactor version but they never released the part 1 kit as a standalone box (It was available as a trilogy kit mail-in). So I just painted Mr. Fusion’s base yellow. Lame.
The doors did open, yes. But the hinge was a scrap of fabric so it didn’t do much for any alignment or stability. The doors had to be propped up. The factory body did not have opening doors in case you wondered.
I tried with some of the details. I gave it carpeting and even door sill lettering but overall it just kinda looks bad. Actually in perspective now it looks just like how the original hero car was before it was restored in spectacular fashion.
I recall spraying this car with flocking once to give it the ‘iced over’ look. That didn’t help the finish much and permanently spotted the windshield. It’s missing a headlight lens and a side mirror and the passenger glass is a shoddy replacement.
Much like this license plate, the car saw its best life in the past. It was eventually scrapped and some of the parts got used for other projects over the years. R.I.P.
