Kit: Monogram Heavy Chevy Chevelle 3 in 1 1/24 Scale
I got this kit from a friend who started the engine build probably 15-20 years before and then put it away. This happened to be my favorite year of Chevelle and the kit was free to me so I figured what did I have to lose?
I added a lot of details to the kit like some of the engine hoses and fuel rails, a few suspension details, and a nice fabric roof with dome light.
I recall this being a bit of felt that I glued to the ceiling then burnished with something to give it the grooves. Little bit of styrene to make a dome light.
It took me about three weeks to complete the model as it sits. Most of that time was spent on the inner hood piece and the paint.
I had a great time making little seatbelts! This was such a large model compared to my usual 1/64 scale works.
It’s always about the details like bushings and stuff like that. This kit was really well engineered!
I spent a lot of time trying to sand and buff and polish the paint. The color is Model Master Blue Angels blue. I think it really came out perfect for this car.
A lot of patience and dry brush painting techniques will bring out all those beautiful molded details.
I also finished the chrome with some Bare Metal Foil. I ran out part way through making this and went to find more. Turns out they make it a helluva lot better than the crap I’d been dealing with for the previous 8 years or so. The new stuff was stronger and cut easily, didn’t break when I peeled it off the page and still looks amazing when burnished. Go figure.
I finished this car in March of 2012 and it’s still proudly on display in 2022.
