Kit: RC2 AMT ERTL 2006 Camaro Concept 1/25 Scale
I built this car in early 2008 after seeing the live action Transformers movie several times. I absolutely LOVED the new Bumblebee Camaro. Thankfully AMT/ERTL got the rights to release the concept Camaro kit, which was exactly like the car in the movie.
The main feature on this car was the doors – they did not open on the factory kit. To my credit they open smoothly and tuck into the fender like a real door.
Oddly enough, as I read in various places, the Bumblebee car was a prototype built on a Pontiac GTO chassis and has GTO seats. I wasn’t going to go that far, but I believe it looks pretty much exactly like Bumblebee.
The paint was a Taimiya color, and it just kept absorbing more and more and looking better as I sprayed it on there. I wish I’d been better at painting and gloss coating back then, but it still looks pretty badass. It really just needed a good wet sanding and some polish to pop.
Opening doors let you see all the cool futuristic detail of the 2006 Camaro! Sounds weird writing that in 2022. Still looks awesome today!
I also had to add a little bit of striping up front because the kit’s stripes stop before the nose. One of those little GM changes before production.
And the front wheels turn. A little. Beautiful car. This was on the cusp of me really getting back into modelbuilding, so I started really putting some efforts into my builds again. Hats off to RC2/AMT/ERTL on this one, it was a really detailed and clean build.
I still have this on display!
